Book beginnings (fragments)

Book beginnings (fragments)

Beginnings. Intro. First words, first sentence. That’s how it all starts with a few words. Words that can track you, can make you read on, or throw the book on a shelf and forget about it.

The beginnings can be long, short, descriptive, poetic, cryptic or simple. Regardless of how they stay with you, whether you want it or not. I’m taking you on a trip or not.

In the list below we have collected some of the preferred books.

Waves– Virginia Woolf

The sun has not ascended yet.

Middlesex– Jeffrey Eugenides

I was born twice: the first time, as a little girl, on a stunning day in Detroit in January 1960; and secondly, as a teenager, in an emergency room near Petoskey, Michigan in August 1974.

Fahrenheit 451– Ray Bradbury

It was a pleasure to burn.

Blue nights– Joan Didion

At certain latitudes comes a period of time, before and after the summer solstice, a few weeks in total, when the twilight becomes long and blue.

Lolita– Vladimir Nabokov

Lolita, the light of my life, the fire of my thighs.

Anna Karenina– Lev Tostoi

All happy families are the same, every unfortunate family is unhappy in its own way.

The bloody countess– Andrei Codrescu

On the last day of the sixteenth century, Countess Elisabeth Báthory of Hungary, greatly troubled by the unstoppable passage of time, angry at the betrayal of the flesh and abhorred by the desolation of her youth, asked the maids to break all the mirrors in the mansion from the hilltop to Budapest.

The blue fox– Sjon

It’s amazing how much like the blue foxes with stones.

Night Watch– Terry Pratchett

Sam Vimes sighed when he heard the swear, but finished shaving before doing anything about it.

Prior to our arrival, Mars had been a deserted planet. I do not mean to say that nothing ever happened. The planet had grown, melted, clotted and cooled, leaving a surface full of huge scars: craters, canyons, volcanoes. But all of this happened unnoticed and in a state of mineral unconsciousness. There was no witness, except for us, watching from the opposite planet, and that did not happen until the last moment of his long history. We represent the whole consciousness that Mars has ever had.

American Gods– Neil Gaiman

The borders of our country, sir? Well, sir, to the north we are bounded by Aurora Borealis, to the east we are bounded by the sun rising, to the south we are bounded by the procession of the Equinoxes, and west of Judgment Day.

American Joe Miller’s Spoken Word.

Shadow did three years in prison. He was pretty well done, had a look of “do not put with me” and the biggest problem was how to kill his time. So he kept in shape, and he learned coin tricks, and he thought a lot about how much his wife loved.

A Man- Finished– Giovanni Papini

I have never been a child.

Seveneves– Neal Stephenson

The moon explodes without warning and without apparent reason. It was growing, one day before it was a full moon. Time was 05:03:12 UTC. Later, it will be called A + 0.0.0, or simply Zero.
